Advanced electrochemical characterisation

BCS-915 battery cycler

Electrochemical cycling characterisation is provided by the BCS-915 battery cycler, enabling highly accurate charge–discharge testing and advanced performance evaluation of batteries and supercapacitors under precisely controlled conditions. With 8 independent channels, a voltage range of 0–9 V, current capability up to ±15 A per channel (with multiple ranges down to the mA level), and the possibility of channel parallelisation up to 120 A, together with integrated EIS (10 mHz–10 kHz), it enables detailed analysis of ageing, internal resistance evolution, and dynamic behaviour within a single platform.

Battery Calorimetry

IBC L91 Isothermal Battery Calorimeter

Isothermal battery calorimetry is provided by the IBC L91 Isothermal Battery Calorimeter, enabling highly sensitive measurement of heat generation during battery operation under precisely controlled thermal conditions in the range of −40 to 90 °C. It allows quantification of irreversible losses, reaction enthalpy, and thermal signatures associated with ageing, side reactions, and safety-critical events. By directly linking electrochemical behaviour with heat evolution, it provides unique insight into efficiency, degradation mechanisms, and thermal stability of batteries—capabilities essential for advanced research, space applications and validation of next-generation energy storage systems.

Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

SECM system

Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) characterisation is provided by the SECM system, enabling spatially resolved electrochemical imaging of electrode surfaces and interfaces with micrometre-scale precision. It allows identification of localised reactivity, degradation initiation sites, and surface heterogeneities that remain inaccessible to conventional bulk techniques. By coupling electrochemical sensitivity with high spatial resolution, it delivers unique diagnostic insight into interfacial processes in batteries, supercapacitors and hydrogen catalyst—capabilities that are still rare within academic research infrastructures in the region.

Simulation and modeling

Software

Simulation and modelling are supported by a comprehensive software ecosystem including COMSOL Multiphysics (battery, electrochemical, and thermal modules), MATLAB & Simulink (modelling, BMS simulation, and data analysis), and PyBaMM (physics-based battery modelling), complemented by AI/ML models for data-driven analysis and prediction. This combination enables multi-scale, multi-physics analysis of electrochemical, thermal, and control behaviour, linking experimental data with predictive models. It allows detailed investigation of degradation mechanisms, optimisation of charging strategies, and development of digital twins—providing advanced insight essential for reliable battery design and operation in demanding applications, including space and harsh environments.
